Review – Ancient Blunders

Hello my friends. I am recovering off of a crazy weekend dealing with family, and, as such, here's something relatively new to the fandom, something I hope is rather amusing, and, most of all, is a parody of something I put much too much folderal into the hyping off.

The review of Ancient Blunders, after the break!

(Make sense? What fun is there in making sense?)

The Description:
On a bright day filled with birds and blue skies, an insane cult attempts to give Discord renewed freedom and a third chance at eternal chaos. But when the spell is interrupted by Luna, something unexpected is created.

Now, an little brown earth colt named Dyx finds himself living under the care of Pinkie Pie, only to be mildly disturbed by memories and emotions from his past. Is the colt Discord reborn or is he simply a doppelganger with a soul and mind of his own? (Both) Can Pinkie Pie protect Dyx from those refuse to see past his yellow eyes and awesome magickalishfullness? (Yes.)

Or, will Dyx be forced to inherit the mistakes that may not even be his and once more become the greatest evil Equestria has ever known? Again? (Maybe. *sniff* Maybe.)

The Story:
The agents of chaos (Screwball, Surprise, Derpy, and Coconut) begin to bring back Dischord with a chocolate ceremony, using Pinkie Pie's element of laughter as a base component. But before it can complete, Luna arrives, dispersing the band of chaos and interrupting the ritual. In the aftermath, the guards are infected by chaos, and a small pony appears from the residual magic.

The next day, Pinkie is having a “Saved from Ponynnappers” party that is interrupted by Dinky needing muffins, tough even though her mother has disappeared. After seeing her, Pinkie has a maternal pang, but writes it off, going to visit her friends. On the way, she runs into Surprise, who leads her to the clearing she was taken to the day before. Meanwhile, Surprise is ALSO leading the chaosed guards and Screwball's crew to the same clearing to aid the search for Discord as an army of chaos. At the spot Pinkie arrives first and finds a skinny chocolate brown colt with a white and black mane and yellow eyes with red pupils, which strike her as familiar, though she can't place her hoof on it. She takes the frightened colt home, dubbing him Dyx and feeding him at the bakery. However, Mrs. Cake cannot fathom having another child, implying Pinkie shouldn't keep him, but instead getting her to find a husband to help, and enlisting Fluttershy for the job. They get married a week later in a wonderful celebration, while on the same day Luna discovers her guards are missing and begins to get worried.

And that's all so far. This story is still in the early stages, but it's certainly promising!

The Characters:
Pinkie Pie is in a very good incarnation, as carrying a story can be quite difficult for the ball of energy. She doesn't lose focus or anything too much, though, and when she does it's for a good effect, so this has a lot of potential. Fluttershy's character is also very strong while still being show acurate, though she does say 'um' a bit too often. Dyx hasn't actually been too fleshed out either, but I like him so far. Again, good potential, if nothing has been cemented so far. Background characters are all well thought out and have solid character, even if Dash and Twilight seem slightly off from their normal selves and Luna uses old language to an excessive extent while otherwise being the caring monarch. Right now there hasn't actually been much time pumped into characters, though, with all that pesky plot getting in the way, so it's hard to say what's going on. As far as villains go, Screwball is amazing, though I do wish to see more of her, Ditzy, and Surprise in future segments.

Execution:
A few minor typos and repetitions, spacial confusion during scenes, and I'm not entirely sure if I like or dislike the author's habits of going into depth with the lives of background ponies. I mean, it's cool and all, and they all feel thought out, but at the same time it is distracting to the rest of the story... It's a fine line to be sure, but I'll say I like it right now.

Enjoyable?:
Overall I like it. I loved the Lord of the Rings and Princess Bride references in chapter 2, as well as the Vinyl aside. Sure, it's a blatant rip off of another story, and has been done before, but I liked the original, why can't I like this too?

In Conclusion:
A good start on a known good premise, it promises to be good. Give it a look if you have the time!

And there you have it, my friends, another review down! Now, with the glut of other work I have coming up between the start of school and a sudden influx of editing work, I'm not sure of the length of what I am going to review for the next little while. I have a request, and it is on the list, but it may be a little longer until I can get to that, and I apologize to have to keep you waiting. Oh, and in case you happen to also read the stories I write, I will be updating my latest one by the end of the week!

The writing never stops, my friend, it is only sometimes delayed! Have a wonderful day everypony!

Your delayed writer,
~Medicshy
