I don't know why I decided to do this review early, but something about this story called for a bit of early attention.
It did not disappoint. Sweetie's Letter, after the break.
(Ah, young love.)
Rainy Day, a boring little pegasus with a bit of a sad past, has just moved into Ponyville when he is met with the most beautiful of ponies: Sweetie Belle. She sees him in a wheelchair and decides that night to cheer him up, getting Applebloom and Scootaloo to come along. They wrote letters and tied them to balloons that they sent flying over Equestria, asking for a return one if they were found. As the letters come back in, Rainy realizes that he has a crush on Sweetie, but it takes the arrival of his own letter to let him act out on it.
It's really a heartwarming story, one you can't help but like!
Rainy Day is a grey pegasus with a white mane and blue eyes, with many injuries after some bullies convinced him to jump off a cliff before he moved out of Canterlot. He's a bit sad, fairly shy, and misses his mother, and he spends a lot of time lovestruck, but there's genuinely a loveable OC in there with no Mary Suedom getting in the way. Sweetie Belle is extremely kind, a bit mischievous, and just quite cute in the whole thing. She genuinely seems to care about making Rainy feel better, and then there's more in the story that plucks heartstrings just right. Scootaloo and Applebloom kind of run as a background pair in this one, both being kind and cool and really nice, (and I just realized I have no clue if Rainy has a cutie mark or not, so I don't know if they considered him a crusader or what, but that might explain a bit of the kindness). They don't break show character at all, so it's all well written. Rainy's Parents also play a role, since his mother was apparently lost suddenly three years ago and was a large part of his lift. Both play minor roles (the mother's oddly larger) and are fine in what little character shows up, but I do have one question: What race are they? It's never mentioned, so I dunno if mom was an earth pony trying some flying machine and dieing or a pegasus that crashed or death was completely unrelated to flying despite heavy indications to the opposite, but this would help paint a picture. Names would help too, while we're at it, but it works alright without them. Just me wanting details.
No errors in spelling, grammar, or pacing that I caught, and the only thing that I could see 'lacking' would be descriptions on characters and places, but the story does fine without them, so that's more of a personal taste thing than anything else. And I suppose the fact that the shipping of Sweetie and Rainy with just 'sudden crush first time seeing pony' was a bit much, but it's all part of the charm. In the end, no qualms here!
Okay, this story is so sweet and sappy it could be used for syrup, but I'm just the right type of romantic that that works perfectly for, so even with my cynical side crying foul the whole time, I have to say I enjoyed myself. Not sure if everyone will (it's kids in puppy love, if it's not your thing it's not your thing). But I enjoyed it, and if it's down your alley, I bet you would too.
At the end I wasn't sure if I hated it for forced shipping couples and predictability or loved it for its adorableness and how well it's all done, and I'm going to have to say I loved it. But I'm a sucker for a sweet story and a happy ending. In the end, it's a cute read, and well done too! ~Medicshy Approved!
And that's it for now. Not sure if I'll review another one this week or not, but either way, have a wonderful day everypony!
